Die ältesten Mumien der Welt stammen nicht aus Ägypten – und auch nicht aus den Wüsten Südamerikas. Bereits vor mehr als 10.000 Jahren konservierten Menschen in Südostasien ihre Toten auf spektakuläre Weise: durch Rauch.

Besonders ehrenwerte Verstorbene nicht einfach zu beerdigen, sondern zu konservieren, war schon unter unseren frühesten Vorfahren verbreitet. In Südostasien etwa mumifizierten die Menschen ihre Toten bereits vor mehr als 10.000 Jahren – bevor sie sie in hockender oder gebeugter Haltung, zum Teil mit einer Art Fessel verschnürt, bestatteten. Anders als die Ägypter, die zur Mumifizierung Chemikalien wie Pottasche einsetzten, konservierten die Asiaten ihre Leichen auf spektakulärere Weise: Sie setzten sie dem Rauch eines niedrig brennenden Feuers aus. Dadurch konnten sie die Verwesung stoppen und die Verstorbenen noch längere Zeit ausstellen, möglicherweise über Jahre. Im feuchten, vom Monsun geprägten Klima der Region wären die Körper sonst schnell verwest.

Eine Studie der Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra hat zu diesen ältesten Mumien der Welt jetzt neue Erkenntnisse zusammengetragen. Dazu untersuchten die Forschenden bis zu 14.000 Jahre alte menschliche Überreste aus elf archäologischen Stätten in Südostasien, unter anderem in Vietnam und in China. Dabei fanden sie auf den Knochen von Toten aus 54 urzeitlichen Gräbern Spuren von Rauch und Verbrennungen. Wie die Wissenschaftler in der Fachzeitschrift »PNAS« schreiben, ist die Rauchtrocknung die bislang älteste nachgewiesene Methode der gezielten Leichenkonservierung – und damit älter als die Chinchorro-Mumien aus Chile (ca. 7.000 Jahre) und weit älter als die ägyptischen Mumien (ca. 4.500 Jahre). Und eine wohl über lange Zeit weitverbreitete Methode: Auch aus Australien und aus dem Hochland von Neuguinea sind ähnliche Praktiken bekannt.

Survey: Americans Trust Fauci More Than RFK Jr. Despite Efforts to Undermine

Anti-vaccine activist and current Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has worked hard to villainize infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci, even writing a conspiracy-laden book lambasting the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

But a year into the job as the country’s top health official, Kennedy—who has no background in medicine, science, or public health—still holds less sway with Americans than the esteemed physician-scientist.

In a nationally representative survey conducted in February by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, 54 percent of respondents said they had confidence in Fauci, while only 38 percent had confidence in Kennedy. Breaking those supporters down further, 25 percent of respondents said they were “very confident” in Fauci, while only 9 percent said the same for Kennedy.

Atlantic Fishing Crews Accidentally Dredge Up WW Chemical Weapons

Until 1970, the US dumped an estimated 17,000 tons of unspent chemical weapons from World War I and II off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean—and that disposal decision continues to haunt commercial fishing operations.
